What is Adopt-A-County Road?
Adopt-A-County Road is a St. Clair County Road Commission (SCCRC) program designed to bring our community together by beautifying St. Clair County’s roadsides. Participating organizations and businesses "adopt" a section of the county’s road system to clean and care for. The program applies to all SCCRC roads. The goal of the program is to make St. Clair County an attractive place to live and work and will enhance St. Clair County’s appeal to business and industry in search of a place to call home. Who is Eligible?
Just about any group of at least six people and three alternate participants are eligible. It’s a great opportunity for all types of organizations, including but not limited to;
- scout troops
- college fraternities/sororities
- activity and youth groups
- small and large businesses
- service organizations and senior citizen groups.
Crew members must be a minimum of 12 years old. Children between the ages of 12 to 15 must have adult supervision at a ratio of one adult for every three children. Participants are asked to pick up litter a minimum of three times a year from the primary roadsides in their designated area.
What are the Benefits?
Besides the sense of pride each participating group will feel enhancing the appearance of St. Clair County, the name of each group will be identified on Adopt-A-County Road signs to be displayed near the designated roadside area for as long as the group is participating in the program.
Is there a Fee?
No fee is required to participate in the Adopt-A-County Road program. All participants are required to wear an orange or hunter’s orange vest while working along the roadside. The SCCRC will supply safety vests.
Groups will also need to provide their own transportation to the adoption site. The SCCRC will provide trash bags for litter and pickup service for filled bags. Trash bags can be picked up at the main office of the SCCRC at 21 Airport Drive, St. Clair.
Safety
All Adopt-A-County Road participants are required to conduct a safety meeting once a year before the first pickup.
Once final adoption arrangements are made for each group or organization, the SCCRC will provide additional safety information, including rules, guidelines and a safety DVD.
Where will my pickup site be located?
Requests for specific roadside areas will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Attempts will be made to match groups with their first choice or a segment that is closest to their community.
