Funding:

Township Contributions

The county road system is divided into primary and local roads. The St. Clair County Road Commission is limited by law on the funds that can be used on the local road system. Using the appropriation from the county, the Road Commission apportions the funds per township through the Match Money Program. These funds are matched 50/50 by the townships for projects the township designates, which can include gravel, chloride, ditching, etc. The Road Commission is fortunate that the townships have recognized the importance of the local roads to their residents, and have often over-matched to assist the Road Commission in these projects.

Townships also participate financially in the Local Road Funding Assistance Program, which was designed for larger projects. Townships submit projects on a competitive basis, with the Road Commission matching up to $100,000 per approved project. The St. Clair County Road Commission routinely budgets $500,000 for this program.
